Freedom Of Speech

Postby emfanem » Dec 27th, '09, 19:19

Has this ever existed.

I mean everyone is free to say that want within reason. but this with in reason part is exactly why we dont realli have freedom to say what we want as everything we can say has been pre approved if you get what i mean

A good example of this is religion, you are free to choose what religion you want as long as its not extremeist. Itrs even illegal to read extremeist material and hows that fair, its not something you have written or even said, its something you have seen. by that logic you should be held accountable for witnessing a bank robbery(wouldnt happen of course but i hope you see what i mean).

this topic came about when i have seen the amount of bannings on this site for people just saying what they think which i think is wrong.

with that said tell me if you agree or not :y:

the best example of freedom of speech my teacher junior year of high school did for us. he had a kid go out into the hall all by himself, and yell butterfly. everyone in the class heard him clearly, and probably most classrooms in the hall. the student came back in and he said, freedom of speech allows you to do that, but even freedom of speech involves restrictions, not restrictions by others but restrictions based on how your "speech" can affect others in a negative way. He then finished saying "no one was affected when you yelled butterfly, now imagine if you went into the hall and yelled fire"

I think that was a great example, really made you think, and for us in america, we have the freedom of speech, but we also have to restrict ourselves sometimes because of who it might affect.

Thats a good point. There is a big difference between restricting ourselves or being restricted tho as it removes the choice which is what freeedom of speech is all about

yeah its supposed to be about restricting yourself, not even like for instance, not calling someone something mean, it's more on the large scale idea, like the yelling fire thing.

you can say whatever you want... as long as you dont trash the government, swear in restricted areas such as school, insult and violate their rights, disturb the peace which can be made into almost anything, cant persuade in religion, and cant talk in such a manner that sexual harresses somene or seems to be harrasing someone...

so in all that is their freedom of speech?
no, there is... you can say what you want, but i dont like it your in trouble :y:

There has always been a battle, in recent times more so, of the intellectuals trying to defend our freedom of speech and idiots (Governments usually) trying to tear it down and censor it.

Probably the most eloquent and righteous defender of freedom of speech right now and of recent times is Christopher Hitchens. Watch this excellent speech on it:
Christopher Hitchens on Freedom of Speech

These cunts trying to censor people don't realise the irony in what they're doing. By depriving everybody else of a view, they're also depriving themselves of the right to hear a view.

Freedom of speech is pointless if we only allow the most popular views to be heard.

I for example, hate religion, with a passion. But I'll fight just as strongly (maybe a TAD less) for a religious person to speak their views as me myself. Unfortunately this very rational standpoint is not given courtesy by many religious fools themselves.

They're usually the ones claiming they're "hurt" and "offended" if anyone dare challenge their weak little views. They're so confident and sure of their beliefs yet they're absolutely paranoid about apposing views being heard. They're so confident and sure yet they're not happy until you believe it too...

But back to freedom of speech. We must protect it and continue to fight for it.

Eminem actually did a lot for it in terms of artistry. Notice how easily he says things now in comparison to the past. Sure we still have fucking MTV muting more and more words I mean... Even words like "gun" which aren't even expletives but 'suggest' violence... Total insanity. BUT he fought the sign-carriers and won.

This is why it annoys me he's agreed to 'tone down' his 'homophobic' material for his UK gig next Summer though. As he doesn't have any. It's all ironic and parody. It's button-pushing that these ignorant fucks still cannot understand. Total morons. But for him to agree not to say it, after all the Government freedom of speech fighting he did 99-03... Waste of time. He's just reversed all that effort. Fucking pointless.

I think freedom of speech is just like all other freedoms. They are okay aslong as they are not intruding on someone else's right's, liberties, or prusuit of hapiness. Speech is not just some simple stick's and stone's child-like concept..Speech has been proven to cause harm to people who can't handle some things that are said to them. The best way to limit the gap between freedom and harm, is to always have an open mind but a closed heart. Because when things get into your heart: see Columbine, or any of the other thousand cases of murder/suicide because of bullying. There is a thin line people. A very thin line...

Word to mutha
she takes me on a journey, to a place called hell,
she showed where she stays, she show me where she dwells,
theres an errie saddness, commin from the room,
its as if its a funeral, but were all doomed,
death all around, but i feel more comfort,
blood rained skies, you could say im covered,
the feelin from her, is like no other
dont wanna say it, but the demon i love her
