Yeah this is acctually real. And if he invites you and you join he gets extra points he can use to buy stuff. You can buy stuff with points you get for either answering a daily question(they sell the answers to interested companies so that's how they get the stuff you can "win") or for inviting other people. You also gets points for logging on.
