Now what?...

I think all that needs to be said has been said from either side. From this point it's just repeating and recycling the same points with new phrasing and vocabulary.

If you're religious, have read everything of substance to appose your view here and are still a strong believer in a supernatural creator... I think that you will likely never be moved from your position so unless you just love debating (which I do) then it's pointless to act as if you're actually challenging it.

If you're an atheist and you've read everything here. You will still be an atheist. There haven't been any worthy challenges to the atheist standpoint and there logically cannot be of course. Other than the shamefully simple, tried and failed non-point of "you can't disprove it"... Yawn. There is no proof of the claim of a god and the very core idea itself is self-defeating and illogical. Even the most intellectual, skilled debater would have the hardest of times trying to argue AGAINST logic.

So I'm personally done with this debate thread. It's been fun in the sense of stretching all our debate muscles a little bit. I'm now just going to put all the effort into the book instead of forum threads.

Enough said.

They don't seem to have a respect for other people's differing opinions on this subject. It seems like no matter how "good" their argument is they have this need to insult and mock religious people who believe in God. If you were good at debating and confident, then why would you need to insult and degrade the person you're debating with? Can't you just have a friendly, intellectually stimulating debate without name calling? This is why I don't really debate anymore because it always ends in name calling and atheists calling religious people morons and blind and stupid. It infuriates me, it's like they feel they're on a pedestal and superior to people who believe in God.
Sorry, just had to get this off my chest :sweating:

Think about it this way.

Would you have respect for someone who was trying to convince you that they truly believed in the tooth faerie? And based their entire life off of that belief.

Probably not but I'd still try to treat them respectfully. I don't know, it's probably just the way I am, I prefer to try to be nice and friendly to a person even if I slightly dislike or disagree with them, even if their beliefs are in my opinion far fetched. I just like being nice :p

That's not easy when you're debating with a religious person... :p

And it's not easy when you're debating with someone who doesn't respect your opinion/beliefs.
I usually enjoy debates but they all tend to become argumentative, offensive, blatant name calling and hostile. :n:

^ I agree. But I think public debates that people like Hitchens and Dawkins do, not to mention their books are not pointless or futile due to the supposed... Eternity of this debate.

BECAUSE, as history has and is proving, atheism is the only consisting group on the rise on the whole. Religious groups continue to fluctuate, sometimes improving, sometimes declining. But, lack of belief in god is always on the up.

The more of these public debates take place, the more people get exposed to the arguments of each sides and are able to reach their own conclusions. Thus far, religion has been trying to bully everyone else into accepting the belief and cowering out of the debate by claiming some sort of... Special, unexplained, unjustified privilege (to which we give nothing else), whereby it simply cannot be criticized or challenged. At all. And if it is, you're suddenly 'outrageous' and 'offensive' and you've 'hurt' their fragile feelings.

Total insanity. But atheists have had enough of this bizarre pandering of the masses now.

The more Science uncovers about the truths of the World, the more unlikely god seems to even the most... Willing of minds. I mean it's been not just unlikely but as close to impossible as impossible can get to some people for a very long time indeed. Darwin of course one of them.

But some people will continue to defend it until we unearth absolute, gigantic truths about the unexplained. Which we will do. We may never get to the root root root root answer. Or if we do, we won't be able to comprehend it, or some won't, so they'll still choose their preferred answer.

But I believe as time goes on, that sect of believers will keep decreasing. Witchcraft was once a widely done, widely accepted thing. Until society fought back and basically said, are you fucking mental? And today?... Everyone would agree. It's just a matter of time. I mean quite a lot of Europe already think like that and quite a lot of Americans. But a lot of Americans are closet-atheists because they don't want to be outkasted or thought of as evil people.

And of course it makes absolute sense that the most absolute religious countries in the true sense are the most under-developed, under-privileged, poorest, worst-educated countries (middle-east, North Korea etc.) who still live like savages and have had their societies trashed by twisted dictators.

I mean it's actually a fact that the most developed and least violent societies are the least religious and there is an actual correlation between intelligence and likelyhood to believe in god. So, I think those two facts say all that needs to be said.

People will believe whatever they want to believe & have enough evidence to back it up. It's either you have faith or you dont. I would rather live my life as if there is a God, and die to find out there isn't, than live my life as if there isn't, and die to find out there is. Nothing or nobody could change my mind about my faith & Im sure its like that with a lot of other people about their own beliefs.. so arguements like these will only continue to go nowhere

To witch I have an argument to, but want to see for certain.

Personally, I don't disrespect those who believe in God. But I have less respect than I would if they didn't. Because it lets me know their closed-minded individuals.

I put belief in God, on the same page as belief in the tooth faerie and the boogey monster (because they're all just as ridiculous). So tell me, do you lose respect for those whole believe in faerie tales? And not only that, they live their entire lives by it.

I believe in God, but I live as I want. It's not like I live my life after what I believe. I do whatever I want, whenever I want, however I want. :smoking:

after reading the first page of this thread, I pretty much agree with EmBase but don't like the way you put down the muslims that have challenged your arguments, I also noticed EmBase was the first one who gave a thought out responce to the opening poster, only to have "Spyder" say "wtf is it with these newbies trying to run the place", he gave the best responce on the thread so far and you're getting stressed about it? do you want him to keep it simple and in baby talk as you obviously like it, YEAH HAHA I BELIEVE IN ZUES, HAHA CUM! :-s

newbies on top, down with the 12 year old vets :flower: :tounge2:

I don't respect the belief itself. It's the belief I find absurd, not the people who believe it.

So I have utter and total disrespect for the belief, its lack of supporting evidence and mythical foundation. Now, as to answer more specifically about the people who believe it... I don't disrespect somebody because they believe in god.

I... Respect anybody unless they give me a reason not to. But I will say those people, I think what you believe is nonsense. And they have a right to refute that.

But much in the same way I suppose you wouldn't... Respect the intellect of somebody who still thought that the World was flat... I sort of feel that way about people who believe in god yes. So it's more a disrespect to the belief itself but there is a proven correlation between intelligence and belief in god so in my opinion, yes, if you believe in god. You are less intelligent in a sense.

Also, the least religious societies (denmark, sweden etc) have the lowest rates (easily) of corruption, violence and crime. That's obviously not a coincidence. I think the best societies are based on scientific and rational values. And the least successful (middle-east etc.) are based on superstition, savage-like nature and mythology (religion).

So I not only see it as a silly thing but a very destructive and harmful thing. It destroys societies. It's a detriment to humanity and I hate it with a passion.
